The landmark win lifted Bangladesh to fourth place in the WTC table with a points percentage of 66.67.

Australia, who elected to bat first, struggled against Bangladesh’s pace attack and were bowled out for 198 in the first innings.

Hasan Mahmud led the charge, dismissing both Australian openers before finishing with outstanding figures of 6-55.

Despite resistance shown by Steve Smith, Bangladeshi bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals to secure a commanding position.

Bangladesh scored 426 in their first innings. Opener Tanzid Hasan anchored the innings with a superb 101 off 197 balls, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 84 off 126 deliveries.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz also made a valuable 65 off 154 balls, despite Josh Hazlewood claiming six wickets for Australia.

Mahmud again made an early impact in Australia’s second innings, removing both openers cheaply to put Bangladesh firmly in control.

Australia were eventually dismissed for 284, with Cameron Green providing the bulk of the resistance with a fighting 104 off 201 balls.

Mehidy then completed a five-wicket haul as Bangladesh’s spinners tightened the pressure and wrapped up the Australian innings.

Set just 57 runs for victory, Bangladesh reached their target for the loss of one wicket to secure one of the most significant wins in the country’s Test history.

The victory was particularly impressive after Bangladesh had been bowled out for just 54 in a warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI before the Test.

Shanto praised his players for their resilience and hard work, describing the result as Bangladesh’s biggest victory across formats.

“Very happy, proud of myself and the way the boys played. We did a lot of hard work,” Shanto said after the match.

He also highlighted the changing attitude towards Test cricket among Bangladesh’s fast bowlers.

“Earlier, five years ago, pacers didn’t want to play Tests. But we’ve been playing lots of Test cricket, and they are giving importance to the Test format,” he said.

“They want to play, want to perform, want to be world-class. That is the mindset they now have.”

“This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format. Going forward, we want to do something special in the future,” Shanto added.
