Baghaei told Defa Press that the two coastal states began intensive talks three months ago after signing a June 18 memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing safe navigation routes through the strategic waterway.

“Despite US obstruction, the talks have made positive progress over the past three weeks, and an agreement has been reached on the shipping route map,” he said.

According to Baghaei, the agreement was reached through coordination led by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, with the involvement of the country’s defence, security and environmental authorities.

He said Tehran and Muscat were still working to resolve several outstanding issues, including the wording of a joint statement, and would continue consultations until the process was completed.

Baghaei stressed that the agreement was an independent arrangement between Iran and Oman, designed to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereignty of both countries.

However, he said the full restoration of security in the waterway and the return of normal commercial shipping depended on an end to US actions, military threats and the naval blockade, as well as compensation for US violations of commitments made over the past two months.

The negotiations are part of technical talks initiated under an Iran-US memorandum of understanding, which tasked Tehran and Muscat with developing a new navigation framework for the Strait of Hormuz.

While Iran and Oman have continued negotiations on the proposed shipping routes, Tehran has repeatedly maintained that the full reopening of the strategic waterway remains conditional on Washington fulfilling its commitments under the memorandum.
