Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, speaking at a weekly press briefing, said Tehran and Muscat had reached an understanding on a map for shipping traffic and were continuing consultations on remaining technical issues, according to semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Baghaei said the two sides would establish mechanisms to ensure safe maritime traffic, protect the marine environment and tackle “maritime crimes”.

He added that vessels using maritime services would be required to pay the relevant costs and fees.

The spokesman said the main objective of the talks was to establish a lasting understanding that would guarantee the “complete security” of the strategic waterway.

He stressed that the discussions with Oman were a bilateral process focused solely on determining a safe route for international shipping and were unrelated to political differences between countries.

However, Baghaei said Iran would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States met Tehran’s demands, including ending its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Separately, Baghaei said Iran had yet to make a final decision on the composition and seniority of its delegation to the United Nations General Assembly session in September.

He said details of the delegation would be announced in the coming weeks.
