Mir Raza's body exhumed as probe into death moves forward

The body of young Karachi entrepreneur Mir Raza was exhumed on Saturday, with samples collected for chemical analysis as part of an investigation into his death.

Members of the medical board reached PECH Society graveyard on Tariq Road, where the exhumation and examination were conducted in the presence of Raza’s family and his lawyer Jibran Nasir.

A member of the medical board said various samples had been collected from the body and would be sent for chemical analysis.

Professor Nasim Ahmed, a member of the medical board, said the board had completed its task and would submit its report to the relevant authorities soon.

The board also collected evidence, records and other samples during the examination.

An initial report is expected later on Saturday, while the final report will be prepared after the chemical analysis.

Lawyer Jibran Nasir said the report would help determine whether the injuries were self-inflicted or resulted from violence.

If the investigation establishes that Raza was murdered, the report could also provide clues about the nature of the alleged violence and the possible number of suspects, he said.

Nasir expressed hope that the findings would put an end to rumours and speculation surrounding the case.

Following the examination, Raza’s body was reburied. His parents and relevant officials were present at the graveyard.

Raza’s father, Mir Hussain, said he was satisfied with the exhumation process and expressed hope that the second post-mortem would be conducted properly.

When asked about an audio recording, Hussain declined to comment, saying no conclusion could be drawn until its forensic verification was completed.

Hussain said he expected the medical board’s report by around 6pm and expressed confidence that it would bring the facts of the case before the public.

He also said media attention and public pressure had helped advance the investigation, adding that the doctors had completed their responsibilities and the family was now awaiting the report.

The exhumation had originally been scheduled for Friday but was postponed.

Hussain had earlier expressed strong reservations over changes to the medical board, saying he would not allow the exhumation unless the previous board was reinstated.
