Two explosions reported near tanker in Strait of Hormuz

A commercial tanker reported hearing two explosions while transiting the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said early Thursday, amid heightened tensions in the strategic waterway.

According to UKMTO, the incident occurred about nine nautical miles southeast of Kumzar, Oman.

The agency said it received a delayed report from the vessel’s master, who heard two explosions during the transit.

UKMTO said the tanker and its crew remained safe and that no environmental damage had been reported following the incident.

The maritime security agency advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.

The report comes as tensions remain high in and around the Strait of Hormuz following recent military confrontations between the United States and Iran.

Washington has repeatedly urged Tehran to ensure freedom of navigation through the vital shipping lane, while Iran maintains that maritime traffic in waters off its coastline should remain under its oversight.

The latest incident also follows comments by US President Donald Trump that he had cancelled a planned military strike on Iran after regional mediation efforts.

Iranian officials rejected the claim and denied reports that any agreement had been reached to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
