Punjab likely to hold local government elections in November after 11 years

Punjab is likely to hold long-awaited local government elections in November, nearly 11 years after the province last went to the polls for local councils, according to official sources.

The elections are expected to be conducted on a non-party basis under the new local government framework, the sources said.

Under the proposed system, voters will directly elect only the chairmen of union councils, while the remaining structure of local governments will be formed in accordance with the provisions of the new law, the sources added.

Punjab last held local government elections in 2015.

Since then, successive governments have introduced multiple changes to the province’s local government laws, resulting in repeated delays to fresh elections.

The latest legal framework is the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, under which new election and delimitation rules have already been notified.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has been carrying out delimitation-related work under the new law, while the provincial government has framed fresh election rules to pave the way for the polls.

An official election schedule has yet to be announced by the ECP. However, if the proposed timeline is maintained, Punjab will elect its local representatives for the first time in more than a decade.
