ECP refuses to recognise Achakzai as PKMAP chairman

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday declined to recognise Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), stating that the party currently has no chairman because it has not held intra-party elections.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja heard a case relating to the PKMAP’s failure to conduct intra-party elections, amendments to its constitution and objections regarding the party’s accounts.

During the hearing, the party’s counsel appeared before the commission and submitted a power of attorney signed by Achakzai.

Questioning the document, the chief election commissioner asked whose signatures it bore.

After the lawyer replied that it had been signed by the party chairman, Sikandar Raja remarked that, in the absence of intra-party elections, there was currently no recognised party chairman.

“We will place the power of attorney on record, but an order will be issued on whether it can be accepted,” the chief election commissioner said.

The PKMAP lawyer sought additional time to present further arguments, after which the commission adjourned the hearing until August 19.
