According to the ICC, both bowlers were found guilty of a Level 1 offence during the opening match of the ICC World Test Championship series between Pakistan and the West Indies.

The governing body said Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to using language, gestures or actions after dismissing a batter that could provoke an aggressive reaction.

Khurram Shahzad was fined 15% of his match fee after celebrating close to West Indies batter Shai Hope in an aggressive manner following his dismissal in the 17th over of the visitors’ second innings.

Mohammad Abbas, meanwhile, received an official warning for celebrating too closely to Jomel Warrican after dismissing him to end the West Indies innings.

The ICC also added one demerit point to the disciplinary records of both players.

According to the ICC, the two cricketers admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough, along with third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal.

The ICC said a Level 1 offence carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum fine of 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Under ICC regulations, the accumulation of four or more demerit points within a 24-month period results in suspension points.

Two suspension points translate into a ban from one Test match or two ODIs or two T20 Internationals.

Demerit points remain on a player’s disciplinary record for 24 months before expiring.
