Noreen Niazi booked under PECA over alleged anti-state remarks

Noreen Niazi, the sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, has been booked for levelling false allegations against the country and its armed forces and spreading anti-state propaganda.

The case has been filed with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in Islamabad.

Noreen Niazi has been booked under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016, as well as sections 505 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to the FIR, Noreen Niazi made “false and baseless” allegations against the state and the security forces during a podcast, with the intent to undermine public confidence in state institutions and create panic.

It further claims that she used social media to disseminate false, provocative, defamatory and threatening content, while engaging in what investigators described as a coordinated propaganda campaign against state and security institutions.

According to the FIR, excerpts from the interview were widely shared on multiple accounts on social media platform X, where Niazi allegedly attempted to discredit the Pakistan Army’s achievements during Marka-e-Haq and incited hatred, fear and distrust against state institutions.

The investigation agency also stated that Noreen Niazi had been served several notices directing her to record her statement and join the investigation, but she failed to comply.

Authorities said the case has been registered under relevant cybercrime and criminal law provisions, and further investigation is underway.
