Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers held several rounds of talks in Tehran on Friday and Saturday focused on practical arrangements for maritime navigation through the strategic waterway.

“The two sides exchanged views on common principles and operational mechanisms for the safe passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz,” Baghaei was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.

He described the discussions as “productive”, adding that tangible progress had been achieved and that technical and political consultations between the two countries would continue after the Omani delegation departed Tehran on Saturday evening.

Baghaei also stressed that there had been no change in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz despite heightened regional tensions.

The latest Iran-Oman talks come as mediators seek a diplomatic way out of a conflict that began when the United States and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran on February 28.

Hopes of a lasting peace briefly emerged in June when Washington and Tehran agreed to a ceasefire under a memorandum of understanding.

But the breakthrough proved short-lived after President Donald Trump declared the truce over on July 8, following a fresh escalation in fighting.

Since then, the United States has pressed Iran to stop attacks on commercial oil tankers and ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran, meanwhile, has insisted that maritime movement through the Strait should be regulated under a mechanism administered by Iran along its coastline.

The latest round of diplomacy coincides with reports that Washington has paused its military campaign against Iran.

Axios reported on Saturday that President Trump had instructed the US military not to carry out fresh strikes, ending nearly two weeks of daily attacks while leaving room for negotiations to continue.
