The weather department said moist monsoon currents are penetrating southern and central parts of the country, with rain expected from Friday evening through Monday in Sindh and several other regions.

Rain forecast for major cities and regions

According to the PMD, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and the Galiyat are likely to receive thunderstorms and rain until July 26.

Rain is also forecast across Lahore, southern Punjab and most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through July 27.

Karachi is expected to receive rain on July 25 and 26, while intermittent showers are forecast in Gilgit-Baltistan until July 26 and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir through July 28.

The PMD warned of possible urban flooding in Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, Hyderabad, Sukkur and several districts of Sindh.

It also cautioned that strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures, solar panels, electricity poles and billboards, urging all relevant departments to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.

Sindh, KP authorities on high alert

In Sindh, Senior Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert in view of the expected heavy monsoon rains.

He instructed district administrations, town municipal authorities and union councils to stay on standby and ensure emergency arrangements were fully in place.

Memon said emergency response centres had been activated in Karachi, Jamshoro, Sukkur and other locations, while rescue agencies were directed to ensure preparedness.

He also urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and follow safety precautions.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa issued an alert to all district administrations after forecasting rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds from July 24 to 27.

The authority warned of possible landslides in Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra and Abbottabad, while flash floods may occur in local streams and seasonal waterways in vulnerable areas.

District administrations have been instructed to take preventive measures, while tourists and residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and streams.

Second monsoon system continues to wreak havoc

The country’s second monsoon system continued to affect upper parts of Pakistan while expanding into Sindh and Balochistan.

In Sindh, Nagarparkar near Tharparkar received 80 millimetres of rain, while Umerkot, Dhali, Chhachhro and Mithi experienced widespread inundation.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Patan recorded 40mm of rain, followed by Dera Ismail Khan Airport with 31mm. Malam Jabba and Bacha Khan Airport each received 18mm, Peshawar city 15mm, Upper Dir 14mm and Saidu Sharif 13mm.

Punjab also received widespread rainfall, with Sialkot recording 34mm and Gujranwala 16mm. Rain continued in Bahawalnagar, Muridke, Ferozewala, Narowal and Mangla.

In Lahore, another road caved in at Ittehad Town, causing a loaded dumper truck to crash into a road divider. According to the PDMA, Lahore received 383mm of rainfall over the past four days.

Death toll rises, flooding persists

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said nine people were killed and 54 injured in rain-related incidents across the country over the past 24 hours, raising the nationwide death toll from monsoon-related incidents over the past month to 81.

Flood conditions persisted along the Chenab River in Gujrat district, where riverbank erosion intensified near Kot Nika and Ghulam Kot. Floodwaters inundated agricultural land before reaching nearby settlements.

In Shakargarh, dozens of villages were cut off after floodwaters severed road links with Nurkot and the city.

A moderate flood continued at Chenab Nagar, while flooding damaged crops in Sakhi Sarwar and the Koh-e-Suleman region. Torrential rains also triggered flash floods in seasonal streams across tribal areas of Dera Ghazi Khan.

River flows remain under close watch

The PMD has forecast further rainfall through July 26, including showers in Karachi on July 25 and 26.

Separately, the Punjab PDMA said water levels in several rivers had risen due to ongoing monsoon rains.

During the past 24 hours, low-level flooding persisted at Tarbela, Kalabagh and Chashma along the Indus River, where water flows were recorded at 342,000, 309,000 and 293,000 cusecs, respectively.

Flooding in the Chenab River has eased from high to moderate levels. Moderate flooding was reported at Head Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad, where water flows stood at 208,000, 165,000 and 190,000 cusecs, respectively.

The authority said water levels in the Sutlej and Jhelum rivers remained normal, while the Ravi River recorded a flow of 83,000 cusecs at Balloki. Conditions at Jassar, Shahdara and Head Sidhnai also remained normal.The PDMA further reported moderate flooding in Narowal’s Basantar Nullah, low-level flooding at Ara Cantt Bridge Nullah-1 and moderate flooding at Wazirabad Nullah-1.

According to the Punjab PDMA spokesperson, river flows increased due to rainfall in upper catchment areas but have stabilised over the past 24 hours following a reduction in rainfall over the upper Chenab basin.

Authorities said continuous monitoring of rivers, seasonal streams and low-lying areas was underway to ensure a timely response to any emergency.
