Iran says it did not seek fresh US talks

Iran has not sought fresh negotiations with the United States, but accepted a request from a regional mediator to discuss recent developments as part of its diplomatic engagement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday.

Speaking in a televised interview, Baghaei said Tehran had not requested talks with Washington but had agreed to receive a regional mediator, whose visit took place in Mashhad, where Iranian officials conveyed their position on the latest developments.

“We had no request for negotiations with the United States,” Baghaei said, adding that Iran remained committed to a “responsible approach” to diplomacy.

He accused Washington of repeatedly violating the Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last month to end the Iran-US conflict, saying breaches had become a recurring feature of US policy.

According to Baghaei, recent military incidents on Wednesday and Thursday violated the first two sections of the agreement, while the reported revocation of Iran’s oil sale waivers and plans for new sanctions also breached the accord.

“Out of the 14 clauses of the memorandum of understanding, the American side has violated various provisions under different pretexts,” he said, adding that successive US administrations had developed a pattern of failing to honour international commitments.

Commenting on a recent United Nations Security Council meeting on Iran’s nuclear programme, Baghaei said Tehran considered UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to have expired in October 2025, arguing that any subsequent reporting on its implementation lacked legal validity.

He said China and Russia shared Iran’s position and had opposed convening the Security Council session.

Baghaei also criticised the UN, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Security Council for failing to condemn US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, while continuing to press Tehran over inspections of sites damaged during the attacks.

He dismissed the Security Council meeting as a “propaganda exercise” led by the United States, Britain and France that produced no meaningful outcome.

The spokesperson also confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Oman formed part of ongoing consultations on the Strait of Hormuz, a key element of the Pakistan-brokered MoU.

He said Iran remained committed to implementing its responsibilities under the agreement, including establishing routine maritime arrangements and ensuring the safe passage of commercial vessels through the strategic waterway.

Baghaei added that Iran and Oman had already held several rounds of technical consultations in Tehran and Muscat, with Araghchi’s visit aimed at advancing coordination on maritime security and the implementation of the accord.
