Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday reaffirmed the country’s commitment to promoting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respect for international law and treaties, and international cooperation for global peace and prosperity, the Foreign Office said.

Dar made the remarks during a meeting with María Fernanda Espinosa, Ecuador’s former foreign minister and a candidate for the post of UN secretary-general, according to a Foreign Office statement.

Dar reiterated Pakistan’s support for strengthening multilateralism and ensuring the United Nations plays a central role in global affairs, the statement said.

He also expressed hope that the next UN secretary-general would pursue reforms at the United Nations and ensure the implementation of longstanding UN Security Council resolutions, particularly on Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir, which he said remain crucial for lasting peace in the Middle East and South Asia, according to the statement.
