Punjab adopts unprecedented Muharram security arrangements

The Punjab government has adopted extraordinary measures for Muharram-ul-Haram, introducing a new security and administrative model that incorporates modern technology and artificial intelligence for the first time.

The arrangements have been made on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to ensure the security, monitoring and well-being of mourners participating in majalis and processions throughout the province.

According to an official briefing, 4,836 imambargahs across Punjab have been linked to a QR code-based system, enabling organisers to seek government assistance through a single click.

Authorities said a three-tier security plan has been enforced across the province.

More than 125,641 police personnel have been deployed for security duties, supported by 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of the Rangers.

In addition, 30,445 trained volunteers are assisting law enforcement agencies.

To cope with the ongoing heatwave, anti-smog guns and sprinklers are being used to spray water along procession routes, while cold and sweet water stalls have been set up for mourners.

Mobile clinics, field hospitals, Rescue 1122 teams and Civil Defence personnel have also been deployed.

Officials said that more than 5,623 CCTV cameras, 1,040 body cameras, drones and over 1,000 4G event cameras are being used for surveillance and security monitoring.

Live and geo-tagged monitoring is being carried out through provincial and district control rooms.

Cyber patrol units have been tasked with monitoring hate speech and sectarian content online.

Authorities said that more than 6,000 objectionable social media accounts and posts had been reported to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The Punjab government has also activated its own LTE communication network to ensure uninterrupted coordination among security agencies.

Officials said 43 intelligence-based operations had been conducted during Muharram, while Section 144 remains in force across the province.

Restrictions have been imposed on the display of weapons, standing on rooftops along procession routes, wall chalking, provocative speeches and the misuse of loudspeakers.

According to the briefing, 794 individuals have been barred from making public speeches, while the entry of 1,418 people into designated areas has been restricted.

A ban on pillion riding will remain in effect on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

All relevant institutions have been placed on high alert to ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram across the province.
