Norway’s government said on Friday it plans to ban its citizens and companies from ‌trading in goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Norway in 2024 recognised Palestinian statehood

“Norwegian citizens and Norwegian companies must not profit from or support activities that help sustain Israel’s unlawful settlement activity in Palestine,” Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said in a statement.

The proposed bill, which is widely expected to pass in Norway’s parliament, includes a ban on importing ‌and exporting goods from Israeli settlements in Palestine.

Bill also bans real estate transactions.

The United Nations has on several occasions deemed Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories illegal.

Israel cites biblical and historical ties to the West Bank to dispute a 2024 ruling against their presence by the United Nations’ highest court.

The consultation deadline for the Norwegian bill is September 19.
