Zelensky offers Putin G7 talks, says Moscow declined

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday he had offered to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at this week’s Group of Seven summit in France for talks aimed at ending the war between their countries, but that Moscow was not prepared for such discussions.

Speaking at a historic monastery in Kyiv that was damaged in an overnight Russian attack, Zelensky said the United States and European leaders had supported the idea of a meeting at the G7 gathering, which begins later on Monday in Evian-les-Bains.

“We gave a message that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7, because Trump is there and Macron is there, so Europeans plus America. This is a good, I think, very good opportunity to meet all together,” Zelensky told reporters in English.

“Europe and the United States were agreed, and Russia demonstrated again that … they are not ready to speak,” he said.

A Ukrainian official said Zelensky had informed US officials and French President Emmanuel Macron of the proposal. Ukraine also conveyed the invitation directly to its Russian counterparts but received no clear response, the official added.

Macron’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this month, Zelensky publicly proposed face-to-face talks with Putin, arguing that the conflict was placing increasing pressure on Russia’s economy. Putin responded by saying he saw no reason for such a meeting and that Ukrainian long-range drone attacks posed no significant economic threat.

At least 10 people were killed in overnight Russian strikes on Kyiv and the northeastern city of Kharkiv on Monday, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Zelensky accused Putin of acting “cynically” by launching the attack only hours after speaking by telephone with US President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian leader said his main objective at the G7 summit would be securing additional air defence systems to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks.

“We will have a meeting with Europeans and also with President Trump; we will speak with him about how to push Putin to stop this war,” he said.
