Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will attend the signing ceremony of the US-Iran agreement, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, sources said on Monday.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will also attend the ceremony.

Senior federal ministers are also expected to accompany the prime minister during the visit, the sources said.

The sources said an initial memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran will be signed on Friday.

Later, negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, easing of sanctions and other key issues will continue for 60 days.

Pakistan has played an active and facilitative role in efforts leading to the US-Iran understanding, with its civil and military leadership engaged in diplomatic backchannel efforts aimed at de-escalation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir remained closely involved in the efforts to de-escalate tensions, while Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s diplomatic engagements with his regional counterparts also played a significant role in mediation efforts.

The signing ceremony is expected to formalise the framework agreement between Washington and Tehran after months of negotiations involving multiple regional and international stakeholders.

Further details about the agenda and participating delegations at the Geneva ceremony have not yet been officially released.
