Budget 2026-27: Government cuts income tax rates for salaried class

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Friday unveiled a broad package of tax relief measures for salaried individuals in the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27, reducing income tax rates across multiple income brackets and abolishing the surcharge imposed on wage earners.

Presenting the budget in the National Assembly, Aurangzeb said the government was committed to easing the tax burden on the salaried class, which remains one of the country’s largest contributors to tax revenues.

The minister said relief had been provided to taxpayers in four income slabs.

Under the proposed tax structure, the income tax rate for individuals earning between Rs2.2 million and Rs3.2 million annually has been reduced to 20 per cent.

For those earning between Rs3.2 million and Rs4.1 million a year, the tax rate has been lowered from 30 per cent to 25 per cent.

Similarly, taxpayers with annual incomes ranging from Rs4.1 million to Rs5.6 million will see their income tax rate reduced from 35 per cent to 29 per cent.

For individuals earning between Rs5.6 million and Rs7 million annually, the tax rate has been cut from 35 per cent to 32 per cent.

In another relief measure, the finance minister announced the abolition of the surcharge previously imposed on salaried individuals.

Aurangzeb said the government had also reduced the tax burden on businesses by abolishing the super tax on annual incomes ranging from Rs150 million to Rs500 million.

For companies and individuals with incomes exceeding Rs500 million, the super tax rate has been reduced from 10 per cent to 8 per cent, he added.

The finance minister said the measures were intended to support taxpayers, encourage economic activity and strengthen compliance while maintaining fiscal stability.

The tax relief package forms part of the government’s broader economic strategy aimed at boosting growth, supporting household incomes and improving the overall investment climate.
