Punjab ends free travel on metro, Orange Line and bus services

The Punjab government has officially ended its free public transport scheme, with passengers set to pay regular fares from tomorrow across major mass transit services in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan.

According to Punjab Mass Transit Authority official Uzair Shah, the decision applies to all major public transport projects, including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus and Green Bus services.

With the expiry of the temporary relief package, the fare collection system has been fully restored, and all commuters will once again be charged according to the existing fare structure.

The free travel facility was introduced in April 2026 as a temporary measure aimed at easing the burden of inflation and rising petroleum prices on the public.

The initiative was initially launched for one month, with discussions later held on extending the programme.

Officials said around 800,000 citizens were benefiting from the scheme daily.

Of those, approximately 290,000 passengers used the Orange Line Train, while more than 100,000 commuters travelled through the Metro Bus service each day.

Following the programme’s conclusion, all passengers will now be required to pay the fixed fares for travel on the province’s mass transit networks.
