256 electric buses to be procured for Karachi BRT project

As many as 256 electric buses will be procured for Karachi’s Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, which is expected to serve up to 300,000 passengers daily upon completion.

According to project documents available with Wealth Pakistan, the Yellow Line BRT has been designed as a third-generation transit system integrated with the Karachi Breeze Network. The project is being developed with financial support from the World Bank and aims to transform public transport in Pakistan’s largest city.

The 21-kilometre dedicated BRT corridor will run from Dawood Chowrangi to Numaish and will connect with the common corridor extending up to Tower. The route will include 28 stations, comprising 22 at-grade and six underground.

Project estimates show the system will carry between 260,000 and 300,000 passengers per day, equivalent to nearly 78 million commuters annually.

The project is expected to save about 3.6 million passenger-hours annually through reduced travel times and improved service reliability.

According to the documents, buses on the corridor will operate at average speeds of 21 to 26 kilometres per hour, compared with current city traffic speeds of less than 10 kilometres per hour.

The planned fleet of 256 electric buses includes 19 buses of 9 metres, 133 buses of 12 metres and 104 articulated buses of 18 metres. The fleet also includes an 8% reserve capacity to ensure uninterrupted operations.

The system will operate six direct routes and three feeder services, enabling passengers from surrounding neighbourhoods to access the main corridor.

Construction on the Yellow Line project is underway, with authorities targeting the start of operations in January 2028. Delivery of electric buses is planned to begin in February 2028, according to the project documents.

The initiative is among Sindh’s largest investments in sustainable urban mobility and is expected to reduce congestion, improve commuting times and promote environmentally friendly public transport in Karachi.
