China urges respect for Iran’s sovereignty over Strait of Hormuz

China’s Ambassador to Iran, Cong Peiwu, has condemned what he described as “unnecessary aggression” by the United States and Israel against Iran, urging an immediate ceasefire and resolution of disputes through dialogue.

In an exclusive interview with ISNA, the ambassador stressed that the distinction between right and wrong in the conflict is “highly transparent.”

“The war should never have occurred, and there is no necessity for its continuation,” Peiwu said, emphasising that a ceasefire is crucial for Iran, the United States, the region, and the world.

He added that China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty and national security, as well as improving regional relations.

The Chinese diplomat reiterated Beijing’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in West Asia, opposing unilateral sanctions, and supporting diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

He highlighted Iran’s legitimate rights as a coastal country of the Strait of Hormuz, calling on all parties to respect these rights while ensuring the strait remains open for global trade.

Peiwu also praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington, calling Islamabad “a reliable and qualified mediator” in promoting dialogue and a temporary ceasefire.

He underlined China’s cooperation with Pakistan and its commitment to contributing constructively to regional peace.

Regarding the broader international order, the ambassador stressed that the war underscores the importance of adhering to international law and multilateralism.

“The international community cannot return to the law of the jungle,” he said, highlighting China’s role in promoting UN-centred global governance.

Peiwu also reaffirmed China’s opposition to unilateral sanctions, its commitment to the One-China principle regarding Taiwan, and the continuation of humanitarian aid to Iran.

“This reflects the traditional friendship between our countries and the concept of a community with a shared destiny for mankind,” he said.

The ambassador expressed confidence in Iran’s resilience, stating, “We believe the people of Iran, with their internal unity, will soon rebuild their homeland and home.”
