Australia name squad for Pakistan tour with Marsh as captain

Australia have named their white-ball squad for the upcoming white-ball tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh, with notable absences among the team’s frontline fast bowlers.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood will all sit out the tour, which begins later this month.

In their place, the selectors have handed opportunities to emerging talent, including Ollie Peake, captain of Australia’s ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup side, and uncapped all-rounder Liam Scott for the three-match ODI series against Pakistan starting May 30.

Young batter Joel Davies also earns his first international call-up for the T20I series in Bangladesh in June.

Pace duo Riley Meredith and Billy Stanlake return to the fold for the Pakistan leg, as Australia look to bounce back from a disappointing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.

Selection Chair George Bailey emphasised the importance of giving new players exposure.

“It’s always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket and be part of the national team,” Bailey said.

“The blend of experienced players coupled with new or returning players will provide a nice mix for these sub-continent tours. Continuing to provide opportunities for players to develop across a broad range of conditions and experiences is important.”

Mitchell Marsh will lead the side in all white-ball fixtures against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been left out of the T20I squad, making way for Davies’ debut.

Meanwhile, Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood are expected to use the break to prepare for Australia’s upcoming ICC World Test Championship campaign, which resumes in August.

Australia ODI Squad for Pakistan:
Mitchell Marsh (c), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Riley Meredith, Oliver Peake, Matthew Renshaw, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Matt Short, Billy Stanlake, Adam Zampa

Pakistan Series Schedule:

First ODI: May 30, Rawalpindi

Second ODI: June 2, Lahore

Third ODI: June 4, Lahore
