Punjab approves 31.5km Gujranwala mass transit plan

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the design of a 31.5-kilometre mass transit system for Gujranwala, terming it a major step towards modernising urban transport.

Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister reviewed the project in detail and directed authorities to connect all parts of the city with the metro train through feeder bus services.

To improve traffic flow, the project will include two tunnel sections, with in-principle approval granted to run the train underground for 17 to 19 kilometres.

Officials briefed the meeting that the modern transport system will have the capacity to serve up to 2.6 million passengers. The route will extend from Gakhar to Eminabad, covering 31.5 kilometres, with a proposed completion timeline of 12 months.

The system will include 24 stations, including two underground stations, while depots will be established in Garjakh, Chan Da Qila and Gondlawala.

Maryam Nawaz said the initiative would significantly improve commuting standards, offering citizens safe, modern and efficient travel facilities.
