The government’s latest revision in petroleum prices has pushed the tax burden on petrol to over Rs129 per litre, according to official details released on Friday.

The breakdown emerged a day after the government increased fuel prices, with the new rates taking effect from May 1.

Documents show that Rs129.72 per litre in taxes and charges is included in the price of petrol. Taxes alone account for around 32% of the total price.

This includes Rs103.50 per litre in petroleum levy and Rs23.72 in customs duty. In addition, Rs7.32 per litre is charged as freight cost, while oil marketing companies (OMCs) receive a margin of Rs7.87 per litre.

For high-speed diesel, taxes make up 21% of the price. A total of Rs82.81 per litre is charged in taxes and duties, including Rs51.62 in customs duty and Rs28.69 per litre in petroleum levy.

Other components in diesel pricing include Rs17.14 per litre freight charges, Rs7.87 OMC margin and Rs8.64 dealer margin.

Sources said a climate support levy of Rs2.50 per litre has also been imposed on petrol, diesel and high-octane blending component (HOBC). The levy on HOBC alone stands at Rs305.37 per litre.

Meanwhile, kerosene oil and light diesel oil carry a lower tax ratio of around 6%. The levy stands at Rs20.36 per litre on kerosene and Rs15.84 per litre on light diesel.

Under the latest revision, petrol price has increased by Rs6.51 to Rs399.86 per litre, while high-speed diesel rose by Rs19.39 to Rs399.58 per litre, according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division.
