International Labour Day is observed in memory of labour struggles in the United States, including incidents linked to protests during the late 19th and early 20th century labour movements.

In Pakistan, the first labour policy was introduced in 1972, declaring May 1 as an official holiday and laying the foundation for welfare measures such as the Social Security system, Old Age Benefits Scheme and Workers Welfare Fund.

The day is intended to renew efforts to promote dignity, safety and fair treatment for workers across all sectors.
