Pakistani crew among hostages after suspected pirate attack near Somalia

At least 11 Pakistani nationals are among the crew members taken hostage after a suspected pirate attack on an oil tanker in international waters near Somalia, officials and family members said.

According to initial reports, armed pirates targeted the vessel and seized control, detaining crew members of multiple nationalities, including Pakistanis, Indians and Indonesians.

Families of the abducted sailors in Karachi have appealed to the government for immediate intervention, describing growing anxiety and emotional distress as they await updates on their loved ones.

Relatives said the captors have demanded ransom, though no official confirmation or detailed government position has been issued so far.

An audio message attributed to a Pakistani crew member, identified as Syed Kashif, surfaced in which he described dire conditions onboard.

“We do not know what will happen to us. Food supplies have run out. The government should help save our lives,” he said, adding that all crew members remain under armed guard.

Family members recounted their last conversations with the hostages. One wife said her husband told her days earlier that he was in serious trouble and might not return. Another family said a captive father has yet to see his four-month-old son.

Responding to the situation, Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi said the government is actively pursuing efforts to secure the safe release of the hostages. He added that authorities are in contact with the federal minister for maritime affairs and the foreign secretary to ensure progress.

“The Pakistani citizens are not abandoned. All possible measures are being taken for their safe recovery,” he said, expressing hope for a positive outcome soon.

No formal response has yet been issued by the shipping agency or other relevant authorities, further deepening concerns among families.
