Suspect in Trump dinner shooting hit with firearm, assault charges

US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro has said the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association ‌dinner is being charged preliminarily with two charges related to using a firearm and assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, but others could be filed later.

The US attorney says that “the defendant will be arraigned on Monday in federal district court” and that there will be many more charges against him as more information comes to light.

The assailant will be charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, Pirro told reporters.

“It is clear, based on what we know so far, that this individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” Pirro said.

“And thankfully, because of the checkpoint right outside the ballroom where thousands of people were situated to hear the president of the United States, because that checkpoint worked, there was no one who was injured.”

A Secret Service agent who was shot was doing fine, she said.

Interim Washington, D.C., police chief Jeffery Carroll said the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives.

He said investigators had no reason to believe at this time that anyone else was involved.

The police chief said there “does not appear to be any sort of danger to the public” now and that investigators believe the suspect was working alone.

Security footage posted by President Trump shows a man sprinting through the metal detectors and past law enforcement, who turn toward him with guns raised.

Officers then swarm toward the man off-screen.
