MCB adopts Mamdani-style campaign push in UK voter drive

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) is drawing lessons from Zohran Mamdani’s New York mayoral campaign as it launches a new effort to increase voter registration and political engagement among British Muslims.

MCB secretary general Dr Wajid Akhter said the organisation studied Mamdani’s campaign strategy, particularly its blend of digital outreach and grassroots organising, which he described as key to its success.

Speaking in east London, Akhter said the campaign stood out for its messaging and local focus, noting its ability to connect wider issues with everyday concerns such as housing and rent.

The MCB has now launched a campaign called Hungry for Change, aimed at registering Muslim voters and building community-level civic participation. The group says it has recruited around 200 “voter champions” across more than 30 areas and helped register several thousand people to vote.

The organisation, which represents hundreds of mosques across the UK, says it is also shifting towards greater use of digital platforms including video content, social media and podcasts.

Akhter said the initiative reflects a broader strategy to move away from reliance on government engagement and focus instead on local community impact, including projects in mosques linked to mental health support and first aid training.

He also called for greater attention to domestic social issues within charitable giving and community priorities.

The MCB has faced a long period of limited engagement with successive UK governments following past controversies, though it has continued outreach work within Muslim communities.
