Free electricity units for power staff scrapped in landmark move

In a first for Pakistan’s history, the government has abolished the facility of free electricity units for power sector employees.

Federal Minister for Power Division Owais Leghari welcomed the Lahore High Court’s decision to approve the Power Division’s request to end the benefit.

In a statement posted on X, the minister said the move had been implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling it a major reform step.

Leghari described the abolition of free units as a longstanding public demand, adding that the court’s ruling had helped fulfil a key expectation of citizens.

He said the government remains committed to reforms in the public interest and will continue to take measures aimed at improving the overall efficiency and fairness of the power sector.

The decision marks a significant policy shift, targeting long-criticised perks within state-run utilities as part of broader reform efforts.
