Six arrested after Vijay film leaks online before release

Authorities in Tamil Nadu have arrested six individuals after a high-definition version of actor Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan was illegally leaked online ahead of its release.

The state’s cybercrime wing confirmed that more than 300 piracy links have been blocked as part of an ongoing crackdown.

According to Indian media reports, the arrests were made following a complaint by the film’s producers, VN Productions, who said the film was being shared across multiple digital platforms without authorisation.

Officials said clips — and in some cases the full film — surfaced online on April 9, prompting immediate investigation.

Cases have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, the Copyright Act, and the Cinematograph Act.

Special teams carried out digital forensic analysis, tracked upload sources, and identified suspects involved in distributing the film via cloud storage and shared drive links.

Authorities have seized digital evidence from those arrested.

The cybercrime unit said monitoring of social media platforms, websites, and file-sharing services is ongoing to prevent further illegal distribution.

Officials warned the public against downloading or sharing pirated content, calling it a punishable offence that could result in strict legal action.

Producers have also urged viewers to delete illegal links immediately or face consequences.

Vijay has not commented on the incident, as he is currently occupied with his political party’s election campaign.

Jana Nayagan, a commercial film with political themes, has also faced delays due to objections raised by the censor board, and certification is still pending.
