Iran warns US of ‘greater lesson’ after Hormuz blockade threat

Iranian Parliament Speaker Baqer Qalibaf said on Sunday that the Iranian nation has shown it will not bow to US pressure, warning that the country is ready to “teach a greater lesson” if it is confronted again.

Qalibaf’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump ordered a naval blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters after returning from Islamabad, where he headed a senior Iranian delegation for talks with the United States, Qalibaf thanked members of the negotiating team and journalists, saying their reporting helped counter what he described as “psychological operations” by the other side.

Responding to recent comments by US President Trump, Qalibaf said threats are ineffective against Iran, adding that since the 1979 revolution the country has consistently resisted military, economic and political pressure.

Addressing Trump directly, he said Iran would respond proportionately to either confrontation or engagement.

“If you go to war, we will fight you, and if you come forward with logic, we will treat you logically. We will not bow to any threat. Test our resolve once again, so that we will teach (you) a greater lesson,” he said.

He reiterated that the United States could only find a “way out” by working to rebuild trust with Iran, saying Washington “owes a debt” to the Iranian people and must seek to remedy past actions.
