JD Vance leads US delegation to Islamabad for Iran talks

A US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance arrived in Islamabad on Saturday to take part in high-level talks with Iran.

According to sources, the US delegation landed at a Pakistani air base in two US Air Force aircraft on Saturday morning.

Apart from Vice President Vance, the US delegation includes US special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner.

The US delegation was welcomed by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of the Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Minister for Interior Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi was also present on the occasion, the Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement.

Welcoming the US vice-president, Ishaq Dar commended the US commitment to achieving lasting regional and global peace and stability.

Dar expressed the hope that parties would engage constructively and reiterated Pakistan’s desire to continue facilitating the parties towards reaching a lasting and durable solution to the conflict.

The visit comes as the United States and Iran prepare for negotiations after a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan.

The talks aimed at addressing regional tensions and stabilising the ceasefire threatened by Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

Ahead of his departure, Vance said that Washington remained open to dialogue if Tehran engages constructively.

“If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we are certainly willing to extend an open hand,” he said.
