Trump rejects Iran’s ceasefire proposal, calls it ‘not good enough’

US President Donald Trump has warned that an Iranian proposal aimed at ending the war falls short of preventing potential US military action, insisting that Tehran must meet his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe consequences.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump said the offer conveyed by Iran was “a significant step” but ultimately “not good enough,” adding that negotiations were ongoing through intermediaries.

He stressed that the Tuesday deadline for a deal was final, signalling little room for delay.

The warning follows Trump’s earlier threat to order strikes on Iran’s critical infrastructure — including power plants and bridges — if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is not fully restored.

The waterway is a vital global route, handling roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply during peacetime.

Diplomatic efforts have continued in parallel.

A 45-day ceasefire proposal put forward by Pakistan after recent talks was relayed to Tehran, according to Iranian state media.

However, Iran has rejected the temporary truce and called for a permanent end to hostilities along with broader conditions.

Iran’s proposal also includes other provisions, such as halting regional conflicts, ensuring safe navigation through the Strait, lifting sanctions, and initiating reconstruction.

Iranian officials have made clear they would only accept a comprehensive settlement with guarantees against future attacks.

“We won’t merely accept a ceasefire — we want an end to the war with assurances we won’t be targeted again,” said Mojtaba Ferdousi Pour, Iran’s envoy in Cairo.

The White House confirmed it is reviewing various proposals but noted that Trump has not approved any agreement, with military operations continuing under Operation Epic Fury.

The US president later said he was “highly unlikely” to extend the deadline, adding that Iran had “plenty of time” to respond.

Trump also dismissed concerns over potential legal implications of striking infrastructure, reiterating his hardline stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In response, Iran’s military sharply criticised Trump’s remarks, calling them “delusional” and condemning what it described as “arrogant rhetoric and baseless threats,” further underscoring the deepening standoff between the two sides.
