Etihad Airways slashes fares by up to 50% amid Middle East tensions

The Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has offered steep fare cuts of up to 50% on long-haul routes as the ongoing Middle East conflict continues to disrupt regional aviation and dampen travel demand.

The airline is offering some of its lowest prices in years in a bid to fill seats during May and June.

Return economy fares from London to Sydney via Abu Dhabi are available from around £688, while business class tickets start at approximately £2,465.

The airline has rolled out similar discounts across popular destinations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, the Maldives, and Tokyo, giving travellers more affordable options than usual.

These price cuts are noticeably lower than what other competing airlines are offering, observers noted.

In fact, according to industry experts, the fares are even cheaper than what was seen during the height of the Covid-19 travel slowdown.

The discounts come at a time when ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have disrupted flights, forced airlines to reroute journeys, and reduced overall demand for travel in the region.

Amid the prevailing uncertainty, Etihad is hoping the lower fares will encourage more people to book trips now, expecting that travel demand will pick up again by mid-summer.

Alongside discounted fares, the airline is promoting its Abu Dhabi hub, including stopover packages and hotel offers, as it seeks to position itself competitively during a period of uncertainty in global travel markets.

Aviation analysts say the strategy could pressure rival Gulf carriers if weak demand persists, though competitors have so far focused on offering flexible booking options rather than matching the deep price cuts.
