Majority of Americans oppose Iran war, disapprove of Trump: Poll

A majority of Americans disapprove of the US military campaign against Iran and of President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict, according to a new survey.

The poll, conducted by the Pew Research Centre from March 16–22 among 3,524 adults, found that 61% disapprove of Trump’s handling of the conflict, while 37% approve.

Similarly, 59% of respondents said the decision to use military force against Iran was wrong, compared with 38% who said it was the right move.

Public sentiment on the progress of the conflict was also largely negative, with 45% saying military operations were not going well, compared with 25% who said they were going very or extremely well.

The survey highlighted sharp partisan divisions.

Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, 90% disapproved of Trump’s handling of the conflict, and 88% said the US made the wrong decision to strike Iran.

In contrast, about 69% of Republicans and Republican-leaning respondents approved of Trump’s performance, while 71% supported the decision to use force.

However, Republican-leaning independents were more divided, with 52% approving and 45% disapproving.

A majority of Americans (54%) expect the conflict to continue for at least six more months, including 29% who believe it could last a year or longer.

Around 35% expect the war to last between one and six months, while only 8% think it will end within a month.

Expectations also differed along party lines.

Most Republicans (58%) believe the conflict will end within six months, while 68% of Democrats expect it to continue beyond that timeframe.

Views on the long-term impact of the war were also cautious. About 40% of Americans said the conflict would make the United States less safe in the long run, compared with 22% who said it would make the country safer.

Opinion on global security impact was more evenly split, with 33% saying the war would make the world less safe and 27% saying it would make it safer.

The survey also revealed divisions within the Republican base. While 79% of self-identified Republicans approved of Trump’s handling of the conflict, support dropped to 52% among Republican-leaning independents.

Age differences were also evident, with older Republicans significantly more supportive than younger ones.

As the conflict enters its fourth week, Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to say military operations are going well. Nearly half of Republicans expressed a positive view, compared with just 6% of Democrats.
