The report, published by The Wall Street Journal, citing two unnamed US officials, said that five American aircraft stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base were damaged during an Iranian missile strike.

According to the newspaper, the aircraft were Boeing C-135 Stratotanker refuelling planes used to supply fuel to fighter and bomber aircraft during flight.

The report said the aircraft were on the ground when the missile attack occurred and sustained damage as a result.

Prince Sultan Air Base is located about 70 kilometres southeast of Riyadh and is considered a key installation for US forces operating in the region.

Responding to the report on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the claims were inaccurate.

He wrote that an attack had occurred at the base a few days earlier, but the aircraft were neither directly targeted nor destroyed.

Trump said four of the five aircraft suffered almost no damage and had already returned to service, while one aircraft sustained relatively heavier damage but would soon be operational again.

He criticised the newspaper for publishing the report, saying some media outlets were attempting to portray the United States as losing the conflict.

The development comes amid escalating tensions between United States and Iran in the Middle East.

Earlier, the US Air Force also faced a separate incident when two C-135 Stratotanker aircraft collided during an operation, destroying one plane and killing six personnel on board.
