Opposition alliance calls off sit-in over Imran Khan’s health

The main opposition alliance has decided to call off their sit-in protest in parliament house over former prime minister Imran Khan’s health.

An announcement in this respect was made by leaders of the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Aain Pakistan (TTAP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, Raja Nasir Abbas, a TTAP leader, said the decision to end the protest was taken in light of the upcoming holy month of Ramazan.

He added that the participants had been confined during the demonstration, with Parliament House, members’ lodges, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House blocked.

He also noted that the authorities started filing legal cases against opposition leaders and workers during the protest.

The opposition leader said the members of the assembly had staged the sit-in to raise concerns about the health of the PTI founder.

“We took the matter to court, and our demand was that the personal doctors be allowed to examine him,” he added.

Raja Nasir Abbas said that when they attempted to leave Parliament, the exits had been blocked, effectively turning the building into a “prison.”

“Our protest was aimed at ensuring that the personal doctors could access the founder,” he said.

The opposition leader stated that the sentiments of the founder’s sisters are valid, and they should be allowed to meet him.

KP CM calls for tough action

Responding to the development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said that the responsibility for organising the protest and negotiations had rested with Mahmood Achakzai and Allama Nasir Abbas.

He added that once the leadership announced the sit-in, they had complied, and now, with the announcement to end it, they were also concluding the protest.

Sohail Afridi remarked that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, people themselves had organised the protest without being assisted by the government.

Calling for tough action regarding Imran Khan’s medical condition, he said any concession would require persistence and firm negotiation, adding metaphorically that “things will not come easily; one must act decisively.”
