Karachi’s Serena Mobile Market sealed over safety lapses

Authorities in Karachi have launched a crackdown against buildings lacking fire safety arrangements, sealing several properties as part of an enforcement drive.

Officials of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) sealed Serena Mobile Market, described as the city’s second-largest mobile phone market, for failing to meet mandatory safety standards.

According to SBCA officials, the market was sealed under Section 7A after inspections revealed the absence of effective fire prevention and emergency response systems.

Authorities said the building lacked adequate firefighting equipment, evacuation facilities, and other essential safety measures, posing serious risks to traders and customers.

The SBCA said similar action would continue against other commercial and residential buildings found in violation of fire safety regulations.

Officials added that the operation aims to prevent potential tragedies and ensure compliance with building and safety codes across the city.
