Imran Khan likely to be shifted to Islamabad jail: Naqvi

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday indicated that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan would be shifted from Adiala Jail to Islamabad Jail once the new facility is completed.

Talking to the media in Islamabad, the interior minister said the Islamabad jail would be completed within two months.

He added that since Imran Khan was convicted by an Islamabad court, he would be transferred to an Islamabad prison after completion of the facility, which would have full medical services.

Responding to a question, Naqvi reiterated that the former prime minister would be moved in line with legal requirements linked to the court that awarded the sentence.

On a separate query regarding the arrest of a private TV channel journalist, Naqvi said he would personally look into the matter of journalist Khurram Ansari’s detention.

Earlier, addressing the Islamabad Police passing-out ceremony, the interior minister said it was an important day for the federal police.

He said a specialised counterterrorism force had been lacking and training for the unit was launched three months ago.

The six-month course was completed in three months through round-the-clock effort, he added, crediting the officers who conducted the training.

He said police training schools in Islamabad were being upgraded and would also cater to trainees from other regions.

Emphasising the importance of the new force, Naqvi said he was confident the personnel would effectively counter terrorism.

Meanwhile, PTI leaders have expressed concerns over Imran Khan’s health and alleged negligence by former Adiala Jail superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said Imran Khan would be allowed to undergo an eye check-up by any doctor of his choice. He rejected claims of prolonged medical negligence and urged against politicising health issues.

Separately, Leader of the Opposition Mehmood Khan Achakzai wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressing concern over Imran Khan’s health and demanding a transparent medical examination in the presence of family members and personal physicians, calling it a fundamental human rights issue.
