Gul plaza fire: Investigation reveals cause and delays in rescue

The ongoing investigation into the Gul Plaza tragedy has revealed on Monday that the fire started from a match burning in shop number 193, with authorities recording statements, including that of a child, for the third time.

Police and the inquiry committee have secured 20 minutes of CCTV footage from before and after the incident, though footage from the mezzanine, first, and second floors was unavailable.

The available mezzanine floor footage has been submitted to the formal inquiry.

So far, 79 people have been confirmed dead.

Authorities have handed over the bodies and remains of 68 people to their families, while the remains of five people are still in the morgue.

Guardians for five victims, including Khurram, have not been identified, and the remains of more than four others have not yet been recovered.

CCTV footage showed that even 30 minutes after the fire began, many shops remained open, with shopkeepers and customers reportedly sitting inside until 11 pm.

The fire brigade reportedly started spraying water instead of conducting rescues, and shopkeepers eventually broke the grills themselves after smoke filled the premises for 20 minutes.

Most people managed to exit the building, but 25 to 30 remained trapped inside Dubai Crockery.

The shopkeeper said some customers were initially prevented from leaving and were told the fire would extinguish itself.

He added that he helped guide about 150 people out of the building.

Investigators found the remains of more than 20 people in and around Dubai Crockery, highlighting serious negligence and delayed rescue efforts.

Authorities said the inquiry is being expanded and legal action will be taken against those responsible.
