PM directs boost to gemstone industry, exports through value addition

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday stressed the optimal use of Pakistan’s gemstone reserves to maximise foreign exchange earnings through exports.

Chairing a meeting in Islamabad on the promotion of gemstones and minerals, he directed all provinces, along with the governments of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan, to work in unison for the development of the gemstone sector.

The prime minister instructed officials to engage international experts for the construction of gemstone centres in Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and AJK.

He also set a target to complete the Islamabad Gemstone Centre by August next year, ensuring the implementation of a comprehensive policy framework with expert guidance.

He emphasised the use of the latest technology and equipment in the centres and called for increasing gemstone exports through value addition.

During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on measures taken to promote the industry.

A site has been identified on Constitution Avenue in Islamabad for the gemstone centre, which will offer international-standard value addition services, certification, incubation facilities, and a trade hub.

Work has also begun on a geo-fencing scientific roadmap for gemstones, officials added.
