Federal government files review petition on electricity tariff hike

The federal government has filed a review petition seeking reconsideration of the recent electricity tariff increase of Rs1.79 per unit and requesting the implementation of a uniform tariff across all distribution companies, including K-Electric.

The petition, submitted by the Power Division, has been placed before the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which is scheduled to hear the matter on January 12.

The government’s application requests NEPRA to apply the same tariff structure to both state-owned distribution companies and K-Electric, and to review the basic tariff approved from January 1.

Following the hearing, any potential changes in electricity rates will be decided by NEPRA, with the final tariff adjustment to be communicated through an official notification.

Earlier, NEPRA had approved an increase in the average basic tariff by Rs1.79 per unit for distribution companies, effective January 1, based on requests submitted by the state-owned DISCOs.
