PTI yet to respond to government’s offer for talks

No formal contact has yet been made by any leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after the federal government expressed its readiness to hold negotiations with the opposition, sources said on Wednesday.

According to the sources, despite a request by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, no positive step has been taken by the opposition to initiate dialogue with the government.

The sources said a government delegation is prepared to engage in talks on the speaker’s directives, after a green signal was issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in this regard.

However, the government team made it clear that it will hold negotiations only with elected representatives of the PTI, and no talks will be conducted with unelected representatives.

Earlier, senior Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said the government is serious about meaningful negotiations with the opposition and that the decision now rests with the PTI on whether it wants to come forward for talks.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, he maintained that PTI founder Imran Khan has publicly stated on numerous occasions that he is not interested in negotiations.

Rana Sanaullah stated that Imran Khan wanted to promote the politics of violence and unrest in the country.

He said the PTI founder was seeking another incident similar to May 9 and wanted to create anarchy in the country.

Rana Sanaullah also said the opposition has been talking about a “wheel-jam strike,“ but would fail to achieve its objectives.

He said negotiations should always take place between political parties, and that national issues can only be resolved through dialogue and the political process.

He urged the opposition to participate in talks under the constitutional and democratic framework and play its role in ensuring lasting peace and stability in the country.
