The decision was taken in a brief meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which also ratified the decisions of the Cabinet Committee on Legislation from 3 to 30 December.

According to sources, the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad briefed the cabinet on the local elections, after which the delay and new measures were approved.

The cabinet also considered and approved new legislation for conducting Punjab-style local body elections in the federal capital.

The Election Commission had initially set 15 February for Islamabad’s local body polls, with results expected between 16 and 19 February.

The elections were postponed due to the proposed legal amendments and new legislation.

Officials said the move aims to make the local governance system more effective and transparent, improving citizens’ representation and ensuring the electoral process is conducted on a firm legal basis.

During the meeting, government spokespeople stated that immediate measures for national interest and public welfare were also discussed.

The Prime Minister instructed cabinet members to ensure coordinated actions for national development and resolving public issues.
