Karachi imposes two-month ban on road and footpath digging

The Commissioner of Karachi has imposed a two-month ban on digging roads and footpaths across the city, issuing an official notification warning that any unauthorised activity will invite legal action.

The decision, announced on Thursday, aims to prevent traffic congestion, reduce accidents, and protect city infrastructure from damage caused by uncoordinated excavations.

According to the notification, the ban will remain in effect from January 1 to March 3.

The commissioner, Syed Hasan Naqvi, said previous bans were often violated, resulting in increased accidents and damage to roads and sidewalks.

He warned that all government departments and private entities must seek permission from the Karachi and Sindh governments before conducting any digging.

“Uncoordinated excavation is causing severe damage to urban infrastructure and obstructing development work,” Naqvi said.

“We will take strict action against violators to safeguard the city’s roads and footpaths.”

The notification also reminds citizens that legal proceedings under Section 144 will be initiated against anyone digging without proper authorisation.
