Double-decker bus service was officially resumed in Karachi on Wednesday, nearly half a century after its last operation.

The service was inaugurated by Sindh ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon and Nasir Shah.

Officials briefed Sharjeel Memon on the features of the new double-decker buses.

According to transport authorities, the buses will operate on a 22-kilometre route from Model Colony to Zainab Market along Sharea Faisal. Fares will range between Rs80 and Rs120.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sharjeel Memon said the government has fulfilled its promise to the public and aims to provide improved transport facilities in the city.

He added that the buses will initially be run on a trial basis to ensure all arrangements are finalised for full operations.

Sharjeel Memon said that starting tomorrow, the double-decker buses will operate regularly on their route.

“The double-decker buses will offer citizens a quality travel experience. They will operate from Model Colony to Zainab Market and will prove to be a major convenience for commuters,” the minister remarked.

He further stated that the buses will also be introduced in other cities across the province, aiming to reduce traffic congestion by carrying a larger number of passengers.

The Sindh government has imported a total of 39 buses from China at a cost of Rs3 billion, including five double-decker buses and 34 electric buses.

Sharjeel Memon said that the double-decker buses will provide citizens with a safe and comfortable commuting option.
