Dense fog disrupts air traffic and road movement in Karachi

At least five international flights bound for Karachi were diverted to other airports due to dense fog affecting visibility in the city, aviation authorities said on Sunday.

According to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), international flights were diverted to Muscat instead of landing in Karachi because of poor visibility caused by fog.

The spokesperson added that a private airline’s flight from Jeddah was diverted to Islamabad.

The PAA said the diversion of flights during limited visibility conditions is a routine measure to ensure passenger and operational safety.

Karachi experienced dense fog overnight and in the early morning hours, significantly reducing visibility across large parts of the city.

Areas along the Super Highway, including Gulshan-e-Maymar, Ahsanabad, Sohrab Goth and Federal B Area, remained engulfed in thick fog.

Foggy conditions were also reported on University Road, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Malir Cantonment, the airport and surrounding areas, disrupting the smooth flow of traffic and causing delays for commuters.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said the city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 17.5 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels remained high at around 95 per cent.

The maximum temperature is expected to reach up to 30 degrees Celsius during the day.

The Met Office forecast that the weather is likely to remain mostly cloudy, with cool conditions expected to prevail at night.
