K-Electric removes 200kg of illegal wiring in Orangi anti-theft drive

K-Electric (KE) has intensified its crackdown against electricity theft, removing nearly 200 kilogrammes of illegal hooked connections, commonly known as kunda, during an enforcement drive in Metroville, Orangi Town.

KE said the illegal wiring was causing power losses of approximately 350,000 units per month, adding pressure on the distribution network and increasing safety risks for residents.

The utility said the latest action is part of a broader anti-theft campaign underway in Orangi during the current fiscal year.

So far, KE teams have conducted 209 kunda-removal drives across 64 pole-mounted transformers (PMTs) in the area, removing nearly 6,000kg of illegal wiring responsible for losses of about 11 million units per month.

Targeted operations have also been carried out in Al-Fateh Colony, Abidabad, Sultanabad, Bijli Nagar, Ibrahim Ali Bhai, Ali Garh Bazar, Haryana Colony, and surrounding localities.

KE said these areas continue to report theft-driven losses that damage infrastructure, disrupt supply, and pose serious safety hazards.

KE spokesperson Imran Rana stressed the need for community cooperation. “K-Electric is committed to eliminating illegal connections and improving the area’s loss profile so residents can benefit from reliable and uninterrupted power,” he said.

“We urge consumers to use legal, metered connections installed by KE professionals and ensure timely bill payments for a sustainable supply.”

The utility also appealed to community leaders and residents to support recovery efforts by reducing outstanding dues and reporting electricity theft anonymously through KE’s digital platforms or via speakup@ke.com.pk.

KE said reducing theft and improving recoveries are key to minimising load-shedding and ensuring a stable power supply in high-loss areas.
