Karachi’s deteriorating traffic system claimed three more lives on Wednesday as speeding heavy vehicles caused fatal crashes across the city, triggering fresh public anger over unchecked violations and poor enforcement.

The first accident occurred near Surjani 4K Chowrangi, where a fast-moving water tanker ran over a motorcyclist, Abid Raees, a first-year student.

Abid, the only brother of two sisters and the main support for his parents, died on the spot.

His father, Raees Ahmed, stood by his son’s body in shock, repeatedly saying: “He was my only son… I raised him with hope… my home is destroyed.”

Abid’s funeral was held in Surjani.

Speaking to the media, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Munim Zafar said the city’s collapsing traffic system was “claiming lives” and demanded urgent corrective measures.

The second fatal crash took place at the Shershah bridge, where a speeding dumper hit a motorcycle, killing 29-year-old Nasreen and injuring her husband, Shahid. The dumper driver fled the scene.

The third incident occurred in Orangi Town’s Faqeer Colony, where another water tanker struck a motorcycle.

Four-year-old Sufyan died on the spot, while his cousin was injured.

Neighbours said Sufyan, the eldest of three siblings, had stepped out briefly to buy something when the crash occurred.

Police have seized the tanker and launched a search for the driver.

According to official data, 807 people have been killed and 11,597 injured in road accidents across Karachi in the first 344 days of this year alone.

The rising death toll has intensified public concern and renewed calls for immediate reforms to the city’s failing traffic management system.
