Govt mulls shifting Imran Khan to jail in another province, says PM’s adviser

The government is considering shifting PTI founder Imran Khan to a prison in another province in view of persistent unrest outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Information Ikhtiyar Wali accused the PTI of pursuing an agenda aimed at destabilising the country.

“These people are attacking the country’s dignity and progress on a daily basis,” he said.

He said continuous protests outside the Adiala Jail have disrupted the lives of area residents, forcing the government to reassess its security and administrative arrangements.

He alleged that efforts were being made to spread chaos under the guise of protest, adding that PTI leaders themselves wanted their jailed leader to be transferred elsewhere.

Tensions escalated outside Adiala Jail on Tuesday when prison authorities refused to allow PTI lawyers to meet Imran Khan.

Following the denial, PTI leaders and Imran Khan’s sisters, including Aleema Khan, Noreen Khan and Uzma Khan, remained at a nearby police checkpoint throughout the day and staged a sit-in at night.

Around 30 people participated in the sit-in, and the protest continued until about 2.30am.

Police used a water cannon to disperse the protesters and seized several vehicles, later transferring them to the Rawat police station.

According to police, most of the vehicles belonged to government departments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The PTI strongly condemned the police action, saying that despite court orders, Imran Khan’s family was denied a meeting.

The party called the use of a water cannon on women in harsh winter conditions “inhumane” and accused authorities of depriving the former prime minister of his basic rights as a prisoner.

A PTI-released video showed Aleema Khan consoling supporters amid the water cannon spray, telling them not to panic because “it is only water”.

After the sit-in ended, Imran Khan’s sisters announced that they would try again to meet him next Tuesday.

With the government hinting at a possible change in prison, the coming days may determine how the political and legal situation evolves.
